What happens during a euthanasia appointment?
- We understand that saying goodbye to your cherished companion is one of the most difficult moments you’ll face. When you bring your beloved pet to us for euthanasia, please know that we’re here to provide comfort and support every step of the way. In the following paragraphs, we describe the actual steps of the euthanasia process.
- When you arrive, we guide you to one of our comfort rooms equipped with blankets, comfortable seating, and gentle lighting. Once settled, we ask if you would like to complete the paperwork and aftercare decisions first before proceeding with the care of your pet. We find that most pet parents prefer to do this initially so they can focus purely on their pet throughout the process.
- At any stage, you are welcome to spend as much time as you need with your pet, saying your final goodbyes and offering comfort in this tender moment. We want to ensure you do not feel rushed; however, we understand that sometimes owners prefer a concise approach.
- Your veterinarian will explain the process to you, answering any questions you may have and offering reassurance during this emotional time. For your pet, it will start by gently sedating them to ensure they’re relaxed and free from any discomfort. This allows them to peacefully drift into a deep sleep, surrounded by the familiar warmth of your presence.
- Once your pet is comfortably sedated, we’ll either place an IV catheter to allow access to the vein or prepare to administer the euthanasia medication through an IV injection. The vet may bring in a skilled RVT (animal nurse) to place this IV catheter or assist with the process.
- Once everyone in the room is ready, we will begin one or a series of injections to allow your beloved companion to peacefully slip away without distress. Once these injections commence, it is a quick, painless passage. Throughout the procedure, we’ll maintain a gentle and compassionate presence, ensuring that your pet feels loved and cared for until the very end. The vet will check your pet’s heart and inform you when they have passed. Then, your vet will give you the opportunity to spend private time with your pet after they have passed.
- We’re here to support you in any way we can. While we have described the most typical euthanasia process, we always tailor it to the specific needs of you and your pet. Please reach out anytime, as our team takes pride in making this difficult time as peaceful as possible for your pet and you.
